The Best Food and Supplements for Dogs With Digestive Issues

A calm, no-nonsense guide to settling your dog's stomach, from the local store that actually knows food.

Digestive trouble is one of the most common things dog owners deal with, and lately it is one of the most searched things on our website. The good news is that most of it is manageable with the right food and a few well chosen supplements. The important part comes first though, because not every upset stomach is a food problem.

Start here: when it is a vet trip, not a food swap. Before you change anything in the bowl, call your vet if you see:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea that lasts more than a day or keeps returning
  • Blood in either, or a black, tarry stool
  • A bloated, hard, or painful belly
  • Lethargy, refusing food and water, or signs of dehydration
  • Weight loss, or any of the above in a puppy or senior dog

Nothing below replaces a vet when those flags are up. Once anything serious is ruled out, that is where we can really help.

Right now we are seeing a real wave of upset tummies come through the store, and a lot of it is plain summer scavenging. Dogs that eat rabbit droppings in the backyard, or goose poop down at the lake, are a very common cause of a sudden upset stomach here in Newcastle. Beyond that, the usual culprits are food that is too rich, a diet switched too quickly, a genuine sensitivity to an ingredient, stress, or a food built on cheap, hard to digest ingredients. However it started, calming things back down usually comes down to the same handful of moves, and we stock the food and supplements to help you do it.

When the stomach is already upset: a gentle reset

If your vet has ruled out anything serious and you are dealing with a mild, everyday upset, a simple reset often settles things down. Here is the approach we walk people through at the counter.

1

Rest the gut

For a healthy adult dog, a short fast of up to 24 hours gives an irritated gut a chance to calm down. Keep fresh water available the whole time. One important caution: this is not for puppies, seniors, small or toy breeds, or dogs with diabetes or other health conditions. If that is your dog, or you are not sure, skip the fast and check with your vet first.

2

Ease back in with a bland diet

Once the fast is over, bring food back gently with a bland diet for a few days. A bland diet is easy to digest and gives the gut a soft landing. We carry a full bland diet lineup from KOHA that takes the guesswork out of it.

3

Reintroduce the right food

When the stomach has settled, this is the moment to move onto a food that supports gut health going forward, rather than straight back to whatever set things off. Transition slowly over seven to ten days. The gut health foods below are a good place to start.

Food first

Food is the lever that matters most, because it is what your dog eats every single day. For a sensitive stomach, a gentle, highly digestible formula or a limited ingredient diet is often the single biggest improvement you can make. Here are a few we reach for.

One free tip that fixes more upset stomachs than any product on our shelf: when you change foods, do it gradually over seven to ten days, shifting the ratio a little each day. A lot of "this food upset my dog" stories are really "this food was introduced too fast" stories. You can browse the full range on our dog gut health food page.

Supplements that earn their place

Supplements support a healthy gut. They are not a cure for an underlying problem, and they work best alongside the right food, not instead of it. These are the ones worth knowing about.
